I'm going over to Japan for about 2 weeks next month. I know at least a few people on this board have been over for tour or whatnot. Any advice anyone has for eating over there is appreciated. I'll be in Tokyo, Yokohama, and Saitama and am hoping to eat something other than a suitcase full of whole food bars.

beware of fish that can slide in a lot of japanese foods, especially stuff that has dashi (a broth that can -but doesn't always - have dried bonito in it). Eat loads of natto, if the sauces are vegan, or eat it plain if you can buy it without the sauces. Goma dofu, nori-make, amasake, soba... god thinking of it I think it's probably one of the places that has loads of vegan treats!!! I envy you, I would love to go to japan :D

i don't know the name of it but my friend was saying that when he was there he ate a japanese dish which consisted of noodles and veggies in a green tea broth. he said it was excellent, however in japan it's usually only eaten when you're sick to help you get better faster.

we didn't have much problem at all, but of course we also had awesome freinds to help us along.

invest in the Vegan Passport, only like $6 but well worth it.

Hey kurt, what was the name of the 7-11 type stores we ate at alot. They had those color coded rice triangle things. Larson's? I could survive on that store alone.

onigiri? i had a tip from someone else about those too. is there some specific color that signifies the OK to eat ones?
unfortunately, i won't have access to any other vegans/vegetarians while i'm there and probably a slim chance of ever finding any specifically veg eateries, so stocking up at a place like that seems most likely.

thanks everyone for their input.

there were at least two all-vegan or mostly vegan restaurants in Tokyo that we went to.
plus a nice Indian place in Shibuya that we ate at a couple of times. and of course veggie sushi is pretty easy to deal with.

let me know if you need info from a native, i can get you an email or two and i'm sure they would be happy to help out.

food didn't really seem that much more expensive than it is here, maybe like $10-$12 for a vegan meal out at a restaurant.

Sure, but do beware of the dodgy katsuobushi dashi that can be used in loads of things.

xkayfabex: I will hook you up with info on food/record shopping/pink rooms/whatever. Call me when you get to JP.

jethic: are you the same jethic guy that used to post on Sunrise msg board 8 or more years ago. I don't remember what I was doing yesterday but I remember your msg board user name from years ago.

Kurt/Chip/(P)Rat: what up!
